Mobile Phone SIM Swap Fraud

Good morning Resident,

Our Economic Crime Unit have made us aware of an emerging fraud targeting mobile phone users, which we want to share with you.

Suspects are impersonating victims and contacting their Mobile Network Operator, using personal data which has been illegally obtained to pass security checks.

The suspect convinces the Mobile Network Operator to reroute the victims phone number to a new SIM card that is in possession of / being controlled by the suspect.

Once successful they gain access to the victims incoming calls, text messages and one-time passwords (OTPs). This allows the offender unauthorised access to other accounts / Bank accounts etc.

  • Be Cautious with Personal Information: Avoid oversharing personal details on social media and be wary of phishing attempts.
Use Strong Authentication Methods: Where possible, use app-based or hardware two-factor authentication instead of SMS-based 2FA

  • Monitor Your Accounts: Regularly check your bank and online accounts for any suspicious activity.

  • Set Up Alerts: Enable alerts for any changes to your mobile account.

  • Contact Your Provider: Ask your mobile provider about adding extra security measures, such as a PIN or security questions, to your account.

To read more about 2FA also known as 2 Step Verification visit the National Cyber Security Centre

    Turn on 2-step verification (2SV) - NCSC.GOV.UK

    Kind regards

    Jayne
